Listen to the phone call
Nurse: Good morning, this is Michelle O'Grady. Could I speak to Dr Barrett please?
Doctor: Speaking.
Nurse: I'm the clinical nurse consultant for the NSW Newborn Screening Program.
Doctor: Yes.
Nurse: We have the test results for baby Rachel Croft. We believe you delivered her in Goulburn nine days ago.
Doctor: Ah... daughter of... Angela.
Nurse: Yes. Her blood phenylalanine was elevated.
Doctor: By how much?
Nurse: It should normally be below 200 micromol/L. Rachel's was 700 micromol/L. It was measured on day four as part of a routine newborn screen for PKU.
Doctor: I see.
Nurse: I'll fax you the test results.
Doctor: Thanks.
Nurse: Does Angela have any other children?
Doctor: Yeah, two boys. About six and four years old. Well, they both seem fine. What do you recommend?
Nurse: There's a specialist in Sydney on call for new PKU patients - a Dr Margaret Sommers. I think it would be advisable for Mr and Mrs Croft to see her, along with the metabolic dietician and the PKU Clinic social worker while they're in Sydney.
Doctor: Well, thanks for letting me know... Goodbye.
Nurse: Bye.
Doctor (on intercom): Lynne, can you contract Mr and Mrs Croft and ask them to come in this afternoon? ...Thanks.
